Two Men and a Carriage
2012 Found objects, plaster gauze, wire, fabric strips 13" $65 I just had to make this piece. I bought the carriage/pram at a thrift store and it was originally some type of potted plant holder. I took out the holder for the pot and began to make this into a fussy pram style carriage. Naturally I put one figure in the carriage and the other at the helm, but with a twist. The figure pushing the carriage has his feet on the back axle. I wanted this to look like a metaphor for when men start heading into child rearing for the first time. The carriage is weighted, with rocks from my yard, on the front to prevent the entire piece from tipping. All 4 wheels are on axles that rotate, so the piece can roll forward or backward. |

This was originally one of Berenguer's commercial lines with baby dolls with very large eyes. She lent herself very well to being transformed into a bee. She was bought by a gay couple who intended to give her as a wedding gift to a friend of theirs that is an etymologist and at the time of purchase was in South America collecting bug specimens.

Found objects, vinyl doll, jewelry, rit dye.
The most disturbing thing that patrons say about this piece is the turquoise beads coming out of its eye sockets. I purposely used a complimentary color pallet with this one. My focus was to start with a piece that was initially interesting to look at that would allow the details to unfold in front of the viewer. The necklace on top of its head was the most hideous things I had in my supply coffers and I thought I would never use it. Also note, I left the original child owner's name on the doll's foot. I think the name was "Ellie." That would have been a good name for the piece but I think that would have been lost on the majority of the patrons who viewed him.

I just had to put a mustache on this one. This piece just needed the right level of detail on its face. The copper bells were left on my door step with a plethora of other items from my neighbor who was cleaning out a friend's hoarded house.

This piece was done, but I felt it needed more. I built the nose bridge detail with gold cylinder beads and standard sewing pins. The result looks amazing in person. It adds depth to the face without taking away from the sour expression of the doll. For his head I used one of my signature elements, building a crown out of alternating heights of beads. I try to use it sparingly but it comes up at least twice during new work created every year.

There's no tin foil!! Originally created with strips of tin foil to create a fringe hanging like a like a long veil, the tin foil did not do well in storage. The tin foil quickly became matted, mangled, flat, and tarnished. I revamped this one for the 2016 Vancouver Recycled Arts Festival, in order to have more inventory. I used a long shell-like necklace and pinned it to her face like I had the the tin foil. The result is similar...but not the same as a metallic fringe.

Found objects, wire, ken dolls, plaster acrylic paint
I love a series. I wanted to do a series of Ken dolls in a linear configuration for a long time. I used, what I assume is a tealight candle holder, sans glass, for the base and plastered up a dozen Ken dolls and painted them black. They are wired at the feet to the tealight holder. I borrowed a fellow artist's technique of color pouring and used a bright, cavalcade of colors. The piece sold to an art collector who installed it into a light fixture as the "diffuser" for the an overhead light in her kitchen.

Lil' Hobo is one of my favorite Creepy Babies. I set out to make a creepy antique looking doll dressed in shades of white. With the fabric I chose and the layers of textures she looks rather shaggy. Her head, arms and legs are wired to a chrome armature that was originally an oil & vinegar caddy. I used several types of fabrics, some of which shed a few threads, daily. Her collar is an old piece of lace and the sleeves of her dress are canvas strips from the inside of my cargo shorts. I filled her eye sockets with two small stones I found in my yard. Her head is adorned with a single barrette of which is missing several rhinestones to complete the disheveled antiqued hobo appearance.

Bathing Beauty is paved in broken jewelry, odd metal findings and a host of pearl tipped dress maker's pins. Her head is adorned with the type of flowery buttons that emulate the old 50's style bathing caps and her swimsuit is a modest one piece made of up the most unique, interesting, and odd metal turnings I had in my possession. She was built in 2012 and later "reinforced" in 2016 with medium density foam. Her head started to cave in a year after she was created due to the weight of the items pinned to her scalp. The foam helped to create a solid structure to eliminate collapsing. The foam was also injected into her body to prevent her torso from the same fate.

Another in the series using porcelain dolls. The figures are stripped of their finery, wigs and hats. They are painted with metallic paint which wipes over their features and leaves their faces with the blank look of a cyborg or robot. With Flower Girl I used several strips of a soft fleece like fabric to create a garment. The doll and her garment drape over a black underframe. The frame used has a handle on the back for easy transporting and to add the extra drama of a bustle. I used found candle holder for a hat. She is holding a few pieces of broken jewelry and jewelry also adorns her neckline. Her jade green eyes and silver skin give her an intense facial expression.

Tin Climber is a wall mounted piece. I've been searching for more interesting wall mounted armatures to use in my work. This armature is a broken paper towel, plastic wrap and tinfoil holder. The armature already has holes in it to mount directly to the wall. The figure is wired to the armature. The figure is posed in a position in which he is trying to pull himself up without "cutting" himself on the jagged edges of the armature.

Created in a hotel in Denver Colorado as the artist worked his day job on a project in the Rockies. These little lovelies were created days before the Vancouver Recycled Arts Festival in 2011. The dolls were dyed prior to flying out to Denver and created in a hotel room over the course of 4 days. They all sold from 2011 to 2016. The red one was the last one to sell, the pink one was the first to sell. Cupies in this size are impossible to find. My parents just happen to come across these ladies at an antique market in 2010.

Kendollabra has been reincarnated 3 times and is finally complete. The first version had the candelabra inverted but was very tall and top heavy. The figures were standing on their heads and would not stay put in their assigned candle holders. There wasn't any other decoration and the focal point seemed to be the glass ball that I pushed into the center of the candelabra. Now the figures are all adorned with found objects and hang from the candelabra. The candelabra's footing is actually the top. It is more interesting with the flare at the bottom rather than the top and its no longer top heavy.

This was a commission by a friend of a friend. He liked the Creepy Baby Dolls but wanted something smaller and red. I used a lot of gold colored metal on this one to contrast the red. It was the first time I had used a doll this size. Its a challenge with this size as the proportions of the decorative elements being added need to be smaller than I would normally use on the mummy sculptures or the larger vinyl dolls.

This sold at last year's Vancouver Recycled Arts Festival in Vancouver, Washington. It was part of the Medical Experimentation series and my all time favorite sculpture. I think that's why it stuck around for 2 years after inception. The picture doesn't adequately show the fluid motion of the wires come from the apparatus to the head of the doll. The doll's head is also carved open and mummified like the rest of his body but the head cavity is lined with Swarovski crystals. Its easy to identify the components used, tomato/egg slicer, vertical turkey roaster, drying rack, and fence building hardware.

While the dates may indicate, it was not 2 years between sculptures. I had a friend photograph all of my work from early on until 1999 when I moved from Seattle. After that several pieces were produced but I did not think to take pictures of the work until the later 2000s. I had a digital camera in 2003 which allowed some photos but only 10 pictures on a high quality setting. Most of those pictures may have been saved on a 3.5" floppy disk.
This particular piece was 1 of 4 works in which I used larger sized female dolls. All of them were in really bad shape and in desperate need of a new career. I gave them all old world, multi syllable names. The one pictured here nearly stands on her own. She is wired to a salt and pepper caddy, laden with a multitude of silver plated treasures. Her bodice is a string of light lavender colored plastic beads.

This is still one of my favorite pieces. I used a coarse twine for a cape off the doll's back. I literally made twine plugs. His lower garment is a piece of black fabric. The picture doesn't show the details of the fabric wrapping around his legs like a serpent. I had some eclectic jewelry I used to adorn the figure. The base was some kind of teapot warmer or chaffing dish warmer. I was going for a short series on rulers/ruling beings and the idea of an over the top cape to symbolize authority came out in the piece. I often joke that the inspiration is Heather Locklear's hair.

I used glue in the holes where the wires connect to the body. Clear craft glue looks similar to crusty bile after it dries.

Somewhat inspired from the baby field scene in the Matrix and somewhat inspired from a host of other sci-fi movies, this piece was fun to make. I used glue in the holes where the wires connect to the body. Clear craft glue looks similar to crusty bile after it dries.

I used 2 Ken dolls in this one and arranged the plaster gauze to cover their faces but not their eyes. I did a few pieces like this. I felt it added some creepiness that was lacking in other works. the cone shapes were some kind of hard cardboard I found at Value Village. I put this piece on eBay in 2002 after the 9/11 attacks. Another eBay user commented on how edgy I was using the gauze to look like a burka. I replied that I had made this in 1998, 3 years before the attacks and that both figures were men. She was even further intrigued and bought it. I think it was shipped to Florida or the Midwest.

If you know what this is...how fun is that?? I found an old game of Stadium Checkers. The plastic marbles were still in it. I had to make artwork out of this game. I love playing it at my Grandmother's house when I was a kid. I used the last of my tomato cages to hold the marbles. It only seemed fitting to work them into the sculpture as well. I made this a wall mounted piece. I had several table top pieces in my catalog so a wall piece with a well played game came to exist.

I made this piece after the ex partner and I went to Vancouver, BC for the weekend. We walked through the area known as little china town. I found all sorts of fun stuff: A bag of paper gold coins, little brass scoopers, trinkets and boopbahs. Most of what I found I was planning on using for artwork. How often would a trip like this come up? The Ken doll's head is a champagne cork cap. It fit nicely on his head, so I put it on and twisted the bottom back in place. I have no idea who owns this piece.

This is what you get when an artist, like myself, has too many loose doll legs lying around. By the time I made this piece I had all the legs from the half man half animal series. Naturally it was a piece that needed to be created. The found object is a little gold colored chafing dish holder. The legs were individually wrapped and painted with wire loops at the end so they could be threaded onto a piece of wire for a realistic skirt effect. The Ken doll has his own legs which just adds to the skirt dimension.

This is one of a few sculptures that does not have any Ken dolls in it. The found objects are a wrought iron wine bottle server, a glass beaker, wire, slide frames, and a plastic model of a human skeleton hand, and a little glass ginseng bottle in the hand. I sold this piece on eBay for around $25. The plastic hand was a kit I found at Value Village. I painted with a paint color called "Bone", I found that ironic. The tin metal slide frames add some dimension. The only way to clearly see the word Ginseng on the little brown bottle is to hover over the piece and look down at the hand.
By the time I made this I was thinking of only using found objects and not using any Ken dolls. It proved much more difficult that I thought. With my style of sculpture it was difficult to read the pieces (that were eventually scrapped) as there was not a central figure or idea...it just looked like junk

I found this multi panel picture frame and immediately snatched it up. The sculpture I created from it was exactly what I had seen in my head. The figure is an older Ken doll from the early 80's and his arms are really flexible. Its difficult to read in the picture but the Ken doll is at an angle, with his feet wired to the bottom of the frame and his body leaning backwards. My youngest sister owns this one.

And that's exactly what it did. There was a solicitation in the local University of Washington paper for artist contributions for a local charity auction. As I was the only artist I knew that made mummies, this was a sure fire money maker. The fundraiser came and went and I was called a week later to come pick up my crap. They thanked me for my contribution and didn't say anything else more. The metal pieces on the sides are game markers from a game called Jumpin'. It was part of the bookshelf series that Parker Brothers put out in the late 60's to mid 70's.

This piece is owned by L. Gayvert of Washington DC. The found object was a hanging long matchstick holder. I'm making assumptions but it looks to hold a long slender box. The metal piece on his head was some kind of candle stick ornament without the ornaments. I accessorized with miniature Christmas light bulb decorations. Some of the little dangly light bulb decorations came off in the car so I had to quickly work them back on the headdress before going into the house.

This piece turned out great! The animal part was a squeaky octopus toy. I did wrap each tentacle individually as the uniformity of the figure required it. It sits on top of what I assume was some kind of Steno warming dish or Steno burner. The small piece at the bottom is a tomato cage filled with rocks and shells from some place adjacent to a large body of water. I think this piece may have been sold to a gallery owner in South Carolina in the early 2000s.

This was always one of my favorites. The found object is a small greeting card spinner rack. I made it stationary and added a horse headed figure to it. It is also part of the half man/half animal series. I sold this to an enthusiastic woman at the Upper Darby High School flea market in Upper Darby, PA. I sold there a few times to get rid of junk and the second time I sold a few pieces of my artwork. Hundreds of people turn out to shop this flea market but the weather is so hot during the summer that one needs an umbrella or tent over their booth...instant sunburn. The woman only had $1. I told her I would sell it to her for a buck, but she insisted on paying me the full asking price...$15. She was insistent that she would get cash and be back. She also insisted that I hold it under my table for her, she did not want anyone else to buy it. I was hoping she would buy it for a dollar I think it makes for a better story but I was glad she paid full price, it made for a better wallet.

This piece is very small. The jelyfish toy was hollow on top and the figure fit nicely inside. I decided not to plaster wrap the tentacles as they were very thin. The marbles underneath are held inside a wire candle holder and then wire (that eventually rusted) was woven between the gaps to hold the marbles and figure together. Another in the half man half animal series.

Another piece in the half man/half animal series. The doll is not a Ken doll, but one of the dollar store "action figures". They have a hollow body and are very lightweight. The figure to the horse is out of proportion but it looks interesting. I found a little saddle and could not resist putting it on him.

This is one of the first sculptures I made. There were others at this time, but I remember a few roommates wanting them and I think I sold them for $10 or $15. The found object is a hanging plant pot holder. Its a bright copper color. I bent the lower ring down to accommodate the Ken doll. The original concept on the early ones was...One found object, a little bit of wire, and one Ken doll. From there it got out of hand.

This piece is interesting in that it uses the Prince doll from Snow White...manufactured by Mattel for Disney. I think it may be Prince Charming but nonetheless, its a prince. The found object is unknown it was some beat up piece, also a copper color. This is in fact the 2nd or 3rd piece I created.

This is one of my favorites. It has nice lines, shapes and curves. This piece was part of a planned series of half men half animal series. I used paper gold coins for the hands and a tomato cage for his head. His torso is half a plastic squeeky shark. I bought about 6 animals from Value Village and Rite Aid to make this series. I spend days agonizing on whether the Ken dolls would fit in the animal or whether it would translate well into a sculptural form. As with most of them below I forget who owns them, but I am pretty sure this was sold on eBay in the early 2000s.

This piece inspired the half animal half man series. The attempt to use a pair of heavy brass leaves as a merman's tail did not come out so well, but it looks interesting. The found object might be a barbecue grill basket. I tried to make the wire on the figure more decorative by curling and twisting the wire. Mr. and Mrs Don Devine of Seattle own this piece. They bought it for $20. I do remember my ex partner trying to sell my artwork to his work friends as part of us preparing to move to Philadelphia. The Devines really like this piece.

The found object here was some kind of shelf for plants I'm guessing. I used it upside down so the bars on the front curve back towards the wall. The photo is not that great. The Ken doll was purchased without hands and the head was held on by a thread of vinyl.

This piece started as part of a larger sculpture for a final in my one and only sculpture class at the University of Washington. The class was intro to sculpture/mold making. The next class after involved welding and metal fabrication. The only reason I didn't take it...I was a broke college student and not that serious about being a sculptor. The found objects in this work do indeed include a mouse trap. There's also the usual washers, wire and straight pins, which are not at all visible from the photo.

The found object in this one was more than likely a long match stick holder. It was free standing and just begging to be a podium. The unique head on the Ken doll was from a small plastic cup from a bottle of cough syrup. The wire in this piece was copper colored. It was a great contrast to the black metal of the podium. It does not however show up well in the black and white photos.
